There are nearly 1,500 board-certified reproductive endocrinologists, and approximately 1,000 of them are active Society for Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility (SREI) members. To become a full SREI member, one must be board-certified in the subspecialty of reproductive endocrinology and infertility (REI).

An RE has completed all the training required of an OB/Gyn, but has also completed a three-year fellowship in reproductive endocrinology, received extensive training and completed two years of practice experience in the fertility field.

The doctor will check for obvious hormonal or reproductive tract disorders that could explain infertility, such as an excess or deficiency of thyroid hormone, an excess of prolactin (a hormone involved in regulating menses), or an excess of androgens (hormones that stimulate male sexual characteristics).

A reproductive endocrinologist may use surgery, medicine, or procedures, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF), to treat infertility. A reproductive endocrinologist may also use procedures, such as sperm banking and egg freezing, to help keep a personʼs ability to have children. This is called fertility preservation.

In your role as a Reproductive Endocrinologist, you can expect to perform duties such as examining the fertility of an individual or couple, performing procedures or prescribing medications to improve fertility, conducting fertility preservation, and ordering medical testing.

An endocrinologist covers a broad range of endocrine disorders like diabetes and bone disease. A reproductive endocrinologist focuses exclusively on those affecting the reproductive system. Because of this, REs are more highly suited to treat the nuances of hormonal imbalances impacting fertility.

Intrauterine insemination (IUI): Purifying one partnerʼs sperm sample and placing it into the otherʼs uterus. In vitro fertilization (IVF): Fertilizing one partnerʼs egg with the otherʼs sperm in a laboratory and then transferring the best embryo(s) to the mother or surrogateʼs uterus.
