Forensic pathologists are medical doctors that specialize in forensic pathology. They perform autopsies in order to establish the cause of death. Forensic anthropologists concentrate mainly on bony anatomy, whereas, forensic pathologists concentrate on soft tissue anatomy, internal organs, bodily fluids, etc.

Forensic pathology is a medical specialty, and a forensic pathologist is a medical doctor. The title of medical examiner is usually the job title of a forensic pathologist who works for a government. A coroner is an elected or appointed public official whose main role is to certify the cause of death.

Forensic pathologists work in the laboratory most of the time, often standing or sitting for extended periods of time. Typical work includes conducting autopsies and using a microscope to analyze tissue samples. A workday may range from 10 to 12 hours or longer and may involve travel to a remote death site.

A forensic pathologist must first earn a bachelorʼs degree, then a medical degree, either an M.D. or D.O. Extensive additional education and training is required, including four to five years of training in anatomic, clinical and/or forensic pathology and a one-year residency or fellowship in forensic pathology.

However, the key difference between them is that for forensic pathologists this is medical evaluation and analysis, whereas for the forensic psychologist it is a matter of mental evaluation and analysis.

Forensic pathologists are medical doctors who have undertaken at least 5 years of post-graduate training to become proficient in the subspecialty of forensic pathology. A forensic pathologist is available to coroners for consultation 24 hours a day, every day of the year.

There are two main types of autopsies: forensic and clinical. The first one is performed in case of suspicious, violent or unknown cause of death. The second is performed in the hospital, by the pathologist, based on the consent of the deceasedʼs next of kin in order to find and better understand the causes of death.
