A procedure in which a needle is used to take blood from a vein, usually for laboratory testing. Phlebotomy may also be done to remove extra red blood cells from the blood, to treat certain blood disorders. Also called blood draw and venipuncture.

Syringes, adapters, and vacuum tubes are among the most important phlebotomy tools because they provide the mechanisms and pressure that allow for blood to be extracted. Syringes use a needle and mechanical suction to withdraw blood.

Needles. Needles, of course, are perhaps the most essential tool for phlebotomists. Needles come in all shapes, sizes, and gauges, but the most commonly used gauge for venipuncture is 21. However, a 16 gauge need may be used for blood donation, and injections may call for a 30 gauge needle.
