Manufacturing the blade of a knife: blacksmithing Once the template has been drawn, blacksmithing begins. To make the blade of a knife, craftspeople generally work with steel. Blacksmithing consists in using a forge to make the temperature of the steel rise (around 900), so as to make it malleable.

The blades are first die-forged (raw metal pressed into a form or die) to mass produce the blade blanks, then passed through a special furnace to be hardened, and annealed, or tempered. At some factories the blades are also ground and sharpened automatically by machine.

There are two kinds of time involved in knifemaking: hands on skill time, and waiting time. For me a simple knife takes 4 to 6 hours of hands on time, and Ive spent as many as 18-20 hours hands on for a complex knife. It took me longer when my tools werent as good, and when I was less skilled.

Legal always depends on where you are. In the US, there is no federal law regulating this. I am also not aware of any state laws that prevent it. I have seen many people at Renaissance fairs selling blades they made, and I am reasonably sure there is not much in the way of regulation for selling blades of any kind.
