Parallax view, or the parallax effect, is a phenomenon that can distort an objectʼs actual position when viewed against a background from different angles. A simple demonstration of the parallax effect is to hold a thumb out at armʼs length and close one eye.

You can create a staggered parallax effect by adding multiple layers of a background and foreground image which scroll at different speeds. An impressive example of this can be seen in ESPNʼs feature on baseball player Dock Ellis, where layered elements create a sense of depth.

This animation is an example of parallax. As the viewpoint moves side to side, the objects in the distance appear to move more slowly than the objects close to the camera. In this case, the white cube in front appears to move faster than the green cube in the middle of the far background.
