They are subtler versions of colours that arenʼt as bright or vivid. Often they have been tinted with blacks or greys or a complementary colour (for example a vivid red can be desaturated with green) so they are softer and more subdued while still adding beautiful touches of personality to a room.

Unfamiliar to some, Muted colors are those colors that possess low saturation and are the opposite of bright ones. Picture a vibrant color, then dial down its volume with a dash of gray or its complementary mate. Voil! Youʼve got yourself a muted color.

You can always desaturate a highly pigmented paint, but you canʼt do the reverse. Mix your own grey with black and white until you find a level you like and use that to desaturate. Add more white or black if you want it a little lighter or darker.

A muted color palette has less intensity to it and often appears subdued or grayed. Muted colors are desaturated colors. They appear somewhat dull or a washed out because you create a muted color by mixing it with gray. However, thereʼs so much more to a muted color palette than just desaturated hues.

The trick to muting a bright color is mixing in a bit of its complement. When painting with my limited color urban sketching palette, I approximate complements by picking the closest color in my palette, which works pretty well. In the diagram below, I dull down an orange ( #1 ) with a blue from my palette ( #2).

Fabrics: Opt for natural fibres like cotton, linen, and silk for a cool and comfortable feel. Accessories: Silver jewellery and accessories will beautifully complement your cool undertones. Layering: Experiment with layering different shades from your palette for a sophisticated and textured look.

Experiment with mixing different amounts of your base color and its complement. More base color means a subtler, muted shade. Blend Well: Mix the colors thoroughly, making sure they blend nicely.

However, the right way to do it is to mix a color with its complementary color (its opposite color on the color wheel) to achieve a more accurate saturation of the shade that is neither light (when subdued with white) nor dark (when subdued with black).
