Generally, we want to use colors with high contrast in website design because of greater legibility. For instance, white text on a dark background, or vice versa. Contrast draws attention and can make certain important elements stand out visually. However, too much color contrast on a website can wear out our eyes.

Some of the most popular instagram colors are millennial pink, baby blue, mint green, mauve, and pale yellow. Cheerful and easy to combine, they can make tons of cute color schemes that will brighten the usersʼ day. The visual below is a stellar example of the use of pastels.

These four components are: Hue is the original color the artist starts with. Shade is the hue plus black to make a darker color. Tone can be a darker or lighter shade than the original hue and it is the original hue mixed with gray. Tint is the lighter form of the hue, it is the hue itself mixed with white.

Letʼs take red as an example, working our way along each of its iterations. By adding white, you get pink, a ʼtintʼ of red. Add black, and you get maroon, a ʼshadeʼ of red. And there you have it: a monochromatic colour scheme of pink, red, and maroon.

The most apparent downside to a monochromatic color scheme is that it can be confining. Thereʼs not much room for personality when youʼre limited to such a narrow set of colors. Itʼs also a design thatʼs lacking in contrast.

Monochromatic color schemes are easy to create because they use only one color. Monochromatic schemes use different tones from the same angle on the color wheel (the same hue).

Although mono does mean one, this approach to color isnʼt just using the same single shade in multiple places in your design. Instead, you can create a monochromatic color palette by choosing one base color (traditionally one of the 12 on the color wheel) plus any number of variations of that base.

A monochromatic color scheme is a one-color scheme that is created using different tones of that one color. Once you have chosen your base color, you can use a color wheel to help you choose different hues of that same color, varying the saturation and tone of the base color to pick out lighter and darker hues.
