Blacksmiths, people who worked over a forge and crafted tools and objects out of iron, were essential to the society of the 19th century. Before factories were using mass production methods to quickly make and sell large quantities of metal items, it was the blacksmith who crafted these items.

A blacksmith is a craftworker who works with metal, such as iron or steel, to craft a wide variety of objects and structures. Blacksmiths, also known as smiths, use tools such as hammers, anvils, and tongs to shape and manipulate the metal, as well as heat it in a forge to make it more pliable.

Over time, the blacksmiths hammer, anvil, and chisel started to be replaced by welding guns, electric grinders, and other inventions designed to meet the growing need for mass production. Today, welding is the cheapest and most efficient way to permanently join two pieces of metal together.

Today, blacksmiths make many different kinds of useful things: gates, grills, railings, light fixtures, furniture, tools, agricultural implements, sculpture, decorative and religious items, cooking utensils, and knives. Blacksmiths who only shoe horses are called ferriers.

A metalsmith or simply smith is a craftsperson fashioning useful items (for example, tools, kitchenware, tableware, jewelry, armor and weapons) out of various metals. Smithing is one of the oldest metalworking occupations. Shaping metal with a hammer (forging) is the archetypical component of smithing.

Blacksmithing techniques are being applied to many industrial jobs today. The skills used and put into practice by industrial professionals, such as welders, construction workers, and metalworkers, are similar to those employed by other occupations that arent commonly referred to as blacksmiths.
