The z-axis is perpendicularly aligned to the plane of the display, with the positive z-axis extending towards the viewer. Every sheet of material occupies a single position along the z-axis and has a standard 1dp thickness, equivalent to one pixel of thickness on screens with a pixel density of 160.

Material Design (codename Quantum Paper) is a design language developed by Google in 2014. Expanding on the cards UI that debuted in Google Now, Material Design uses more grid-based layouts, responsive animations and transitions, padding, and depth effects such as lighting and shadows.

Material UI has nothing to do with Google anymore, though It started as a React component library based on Googleʼs Material Design system, but it is entirely itʼs own thing now. Edit: I guess it is still based on Material Design, just not the current version.

Material Designʼs motion system is comprised of four patterns for transitioning between components or full-screen views. The patterns are designed to help users navigate and understand an app by reinforcing relationships between UI elements. The transition patterns are: Container transform.

Flat design tends to use limited but bold colors for fewer distractions, while the simplicity of the UI element design encourages efficiency and functionality. Material Design also strives towards simplicity but attempts it from a different angle: basic interactions with real world elements (like paper).

Unlike the X and Y axes, which represent the horizontal and vertical planes respectively, the Z-axis extends perpendicularly into or out of the plane of the design. This additional axis allows for the representation of depth, giving objects in 3D space their spatial relationships and volume.

Googleʼs Material Design guidelines have become the signature look of their websites and apps. Still, there are plenty of use cases outside of Googleʼs platforms where Material Design is also a solid choice. authors are vetted experts in their fields and write on topics in which they have demonstrated experience.

Shadows provide important visual cues about objectsʼ depth and directional movement. They are the only visual cue indicating the amount of separation between surfaces. An objectʼs elevation determines the appearance of its shadow.
