2) Fact. The government provides housing for employees and their families based on the number of Eligible Family Members (EFMs) at post or provides a Living Quarter Allowance (LQA) or Overseas Housing Allowance (OHA) at posts where there is no official housing.

What is the FSOT pass rate? The FSOT pass rate was historically around 30-40%. This low percentage means that the majority of applicants did not pass the FSOT. The reasons for the low pass rate are varied.

The score provided is in comparison to others who have taken the test. A score above 50 on an individual test means you scored above average, and a score below 50 means you scored below average. Scores typically range from 30 to 70. On the total score, a score of 154 and higher is passing and below 154 is failing.

It is extremely competitive of the approximately 20,000 people who take the FSOT each year, only about 500-700 are actually offered positions in the Foreign Service, about 2-3%. Previous versions of the exam had their share of critics, however, and were determined to have been biased.

FSOs of the State Department are split among five career tracks, called cones: consular officers, economic officers, management officers, political officers, and public diplomacy officers.

The Foreign Service exam pass rate is a dismal 20%. That means that 4 out of every 5 are destined to fail in their first step to becoming an FSO.

It varies slightly but over any ten-year period it averages out at about 2.5% per annum. Roughly 15,000 take the written but budget constraints only permit the commissioning of between 250 to 300 officers. There are only 8,000 FSOs worldwide.
