Think Tank Search searches the websites of institutions that generate public policy research, analysis, and activity. These sites are affiliated with universities, governments, advocacy groups, foundations, and non-governmental organizations.

The term think tank was first used in military jargon during World War II to describe a safe place where plans and strategies could be discussed, but its meaning began to change during the 1960s when it came to be used in the United States to describe private nonprofit policy research organizations.

Mid-level think tank scholars and analysts earn from $50,000 to $80,000. Senior analysts are typically paid $80,000 to $200,000. For instance Cato Institute senior fellows are each paid about $160,000 as of 2012.

They are sometimes required for those roles (especially at older think tanks, see Part 2) but a masterʼs degree plus several years of policy/government experience is often treated as a roughly equivalent qualification. Going straight from a PhD program into a think tank is possible but can also be difficult.

Advocacy-focused think tanks are often but not necessarily partisan. Non-partisan think tanks that do advocacy tend to be narrowly focused on specific issues, for example the Federation of American Scientists, World Resources Institute, Arms Control Association, or the Good Food Institute.
