DEFINITION
An API, or “Application Programming Interface,” allows two applications to communicate with each other to complete complex tasks. For example, Bitly has an API that allows you to automatically shorten hyperlinks within Twitter’s publishing tool, Tweetdeck, without leaving the the dashboard.
